Oriheal Pawsofen Meloxicam NSAID Tablet for Dogs & Cats (50mg | 100mg)

Oriheal Pawsofen is a prescription veterinary non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) tablet for dogs and cats, containing Meloxicam — a selective COX-2 inhibitor with potent analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activity. Meloxicam is one of the most widely prescribed veterinary NSAIDs globally, with an established safety and efficacy profile for both acute and chronic pain management in dogs and cats. Available in 50mg and 100mg tablet strengths for accurate weight-based dosing. Administer strictly as directed by a licensed veterinarian.

Active Ingredient

  • Meloxicam — 50mg or 100mg per tablet: Oxicam-class selective COX-2 inhibitor NSAID; mechanism of action — inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, which catalyse the conversion of arachidonic acid (released from damaged cell membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2) to prostaglandin H2 (PGH2); PGH2 is the precursor for downstream inflammatory mediators including prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), prostacyclin (PGI2), and thromboxane A2 (TXA2); Meloxicam preferentially inhibits COX-2 (the inducible isoform upregulated at sites of inflammation, injury, and surgery) over COX-1 (the constitutive isoform that maintains physiological GI mucosal integrity, platelet function, and renal blood flow); selective COX-2 inhibition reduces production of PGE2 and other pro-inflammatory prostaglandins at the inflammatory site, thereby reducing pain sensitisation of peripheral nociceptors, oedema, and inflammatory hyperalgesia; relative COX-2 selectivity provides a more favourable GI and platelet safety profile compared to non-selective NSAIDs (aspirin, flunixin), though GI and renal risks are not fully eliminated — COX-1-dependent GI mucosal protection, renal perfusion, and platelet aggregation can be impaired even by COX-2-selective NSAIDs at clinical doses
  • Tablet excipients — confirm from Oriheal Pawsofen product label

Therapeutic Class

  • Prescription veterinary selective COX-2 inhibitor NSAID analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic oral tablet for dogs and cats — osteoarthritis, post-operative pain, musculoskeletal injury, and chronic pain management

Indications

  • Osteoarthritis (OA) — chronic pain management in dogs and cats with confirmed osteoarthritis; reduces joint pain, inflammation, and periarticular oedema; improves mobility and quality of life in animals with age-related or secondary OA
  • Post-operative pain management — acute analgesia following orthopaedic, soft tissue, and general surgical procedures; reduces post-operative inflammation and oedema
  • Acute musculoskeletal injuries — sprains, strains, contusions, and soft tissue injuries causing acute pain and inflammation
  • Hip dysplasia — pain management in dogs with canine hip dysplasia (CHD); reduces hip joint inflammation and pain; adjunctive medical management alongside physiotherapy and weight management
  • Spondylosis deformans — pain management in dogs with vertebral spondylosis causing chronic spinal pain and stiffness
  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) — adjunctive pain management in dogs with IVDD-associated spinal pain (confirm suitability and NSAID washout requirements with veterinarian, particularly if surgical management is planned)
  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain — ongoing pain management in dogs and cats with chronic joint disorders, degenerative joint disease, and mobility impairment
  • Fever (pyrexia) — antipyretic use in dogs and cats with fever associated with inflammatory or infectious conditions (confirm with veterinarian; treat underlying cause)

Dosage & Administration

  • Administer strictly as directed by a licensed veterinarian — this is a prescription veterinary medicine
  • Dogs — standard dosing: Initial loading dose 0.2mg/kg body weight on Day 1 (once daily orally); maintenance dose 0.1mg/kg once daily thereafter; confirm weight-based dose, tablet strength selection, and treatment duration from Oriheal Pawsofen product label or veterinary prescription
  • Cats — use with caution: Cats have significantly reduced glucuronidation capacity compared to dogs — Meloxicam metabolism is slower and accumulation risk is higher; use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration; confirm cat-specific dosing from product label and veterinarian; long-term Meloxicam use in cats requires careful renal monitoring
  • Administer orally with food or immediately after feeding to reduce GI adverse effects
  • Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration adequate to control clinical signs
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose or frequency

Contraindications

  • Do not use in animals with active or suspected gastrointestinal ulceration, erosion, or GI bleeding — NSAID-induced inhibition of COX-1 reduces prostaglandin-mediated GI mucosal protection, worsening existing GI pathology
  • Do not use in animals with pre-existing renal impairment — Meloxicam reduces renal prostaglandin synthesis, which supports renal perfusion in states of reduced cardiac output or dehydration; animals with renal disease, dehydration, or haemodynamic compromise are at high risk of NSAID-induced acute renal failure
  • Do not use in animals with severe hepatic disease — Meloxicam is extensively hepatically metabolised; hepatic failure may cause drug accumulation and toxicity
  • Do not use in animals with known cardiac failure or oedematous conditions — NSAID-induced fluid retention may worsen cardiac or oedematous conditions
  • Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals without veterinary assessment — NSAIDs can cause premature closure of the ductus arteriosus in developing fetuses and may be excreted in milk
  • Do not use in animals under 6 weeks of age
  • Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to Meloxicam or any other NSAID

Drug Interactions (NSAID Washout Protocol)

  • Other NSAIDs (aspirin, carprofen, flunixin, ketoprofen): Do not administer concurrently or within the NSAID washout period — combined NSAID use causes additive GI, renal, and hepatic toxicity; a washout period of at least 5–7 days is typically required when switching between NSAIDs (confirm washout period with veterinarian)
  • Corticosteroids (prednisolone, dexamethasone): Concurrent use with NSAIDs significantly increases risk of GI ulceration and GI perforation — do not combine; a washout period of at least 24–48 hours is required when transitioning from corticosteroids to NSAIDs (confirm with veterinarian)
  • Nephrotoxic drugs (aminoglycosides, amphotericin B, cyclosporin): Combined use with NSAIDs increases nephrotoxicity risk; use with caution and with renal function monitoring
  • Anticoagulants (warfarin): NSAIDs may displace warfarin from plasma protein binding sites, potentiating anticoagulant effect; monitor coagulation
  • ACE inhibitors and diuretics: NSAIDs may reduce the antihypertensive and diuretic efficacy of these drugs; combined use may increase risk of acute renal failure, particularly in animals with pre-existing cardiac or renal disease

Monitoring Requirements

  • Baseline renal function (BUN, creatinine, SDMA, urinalysis) and hepatic function (ALT, ALP) recommended before initiating Meloxicam therapy, particularly for long-term use
  • Periodic renal and hepatic function monitoring during long-term NSAID therapy as directed by veterinarian
  • Monitor for GI adverse effects — vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia, melaena (black tarry stools indicating GI bleeding); discontinue and contact veterinarian immediately if GI bleeding is suspected
  • Monitor for signs of renal toxicity — increased thirst and urination (PU/PD), reduced urine output, lethargy; discontinue and contact veterinarian immediately if renal toxicity is suspected

Safety Information

  • Prescription veterinary medicine — must be prescribed and dispensed by or under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian
  • Ensure animals are well hydrated before and during Meloxicam therapy — dehydration significantly increases risk of NSAID-induced renal toxicity
  • GI protective agents (omeprazole, sucralfate, misoprostol) may be co-prescribed by the veterinarian for animals at elevated GI risk during long-term NSAID therapy
  • Not for human use — Meloxicam is used in human medicine but at entirely different doses; accidental human ingestion should prompt immediate medical attention
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight; keep in original packaging
