Use only under the direction of a licensed veterinarian, and never start, stop, or change the dose of an anticonvulsant abruptly — sudden withdrawal of bromide therapy can precipitate breakthrough seizures or status epilepticus. Monitor for sedation, ataxia (hind end weakness and loss of coordination), increased thirst and urination, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, and rare skin disorders; give with food or divide the daily dose into two or more portions if these occur. Use with caution in dogs with renal insufficiency, as bromide is cleared by the kidneys and toxicity (bromism) can develop. Dietary chloride intake affects bromide elimination, so keep the diet consistent during therapy and tell your veterinarian before changing food. Not for use in cats, in which potassium bromide is associated with serious respiratory adverse effects. Safety in pregnant and lactating bitches should be confirmed with a veterinarian. Epicare is used to support dogs with idiopathic epilepsy and with seizures secondary to poison ingestion, liver disease, blood sugar imbalance, kidney disease, electrolyte disturbance, anaemia, head injury, encephalitis, stroke, and brain tumours. Composition & Mechanism of Action

• Potassium Bromide — halide anticonvulsant. The bromide ion competes with chloride for transport through GABA-gated chloride channels in neuronal membranes. Because bromide passes through these channels more readily than chloride, it hyperpolarises the neuron and raises the threshold that must be crossed before a seizure can be generated, damping the abnormal electrical discharges that spread through the brain during a seizure. Bromide is eliminated unchanged by the kidneys rather than being metabolised hepatically, which is the basis of its liver-safe profile and its very long elimination half-life.
• Cyanocobalamin (Vitamin B12) — essential cofactor for myelin maintenance and normal neurological function; supports nerve health during long-term therapy.
