PRESCRIPTION VETERINARY MEDICINE — For veterinary use only. Must be prescribed and administered by or under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian. FOR INTRAVENOUS (IV) INFUSION ONLY — Do not administer by direct IV push or intramuscular injection. Must be reconstituted and diluted before administration. Administer by slow IV infusion only — rapid IV administration causes severe cardiovascular toxicity (hypotension, arrhythmia). Rx only. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 25°C. Protect from light.
Alembic Docmycin® Doxycycline for Injection USP 100mg | Sterile Lyophilized Powder for IV Infusion | Tetracycline Antibiotic | Veterinary Rx
Alembic Docmycin Injection is a sterile, lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder for reconstitution and intravenous infusion, containing Doxycycline Hyclate USP 100mg per vial. This is the parenteral (injectable) formulation of Doxycycline — indicated for serious and systemic bacterial infections in dogs where oral Doxycycline therapy is not feasible (due to vomiting, severe illness, inability to swallow, or requirement for rapid therapeutic plasma levels). As a tetracycline-class bacteriostatic antibiotic, Docmycin Injection provides the full broad-spectrum activity of Doxycycline — including against obligate intracellular organisms (Ehrlichia, Rickettsia, Anaplasma) and Spirochaetes (Leptospira, Borrelia) — via direct IV delivery, bypassing GI absorption variability and achieving immediate therapeutic plasma concentrations. Strict IV infusion protocol must be followed as directed by a licensed veterinarian.
Active Ingredient & Formulation
-
Doxycycline Hyclate USP — Sterile lyophilized powder: Doxycycline Hyclate is the hydrochloride hemiethanol hemisolvate salt of Doxycycline — the salt form selected for the injectable formulation due to its superior aqueous solubility compared to Doxycycline monohydrate (the form used in oral tablets/capsules); lyophilisation (freeze-drying) preserves the sterile powder in a stable, reconstitutable form with extended shelf-life under refrigerated/controlled room temperature storage; each vial contains 100mg Doxycycline Hyclate (equivalent to 100mg Doxycycline base); reconstitution protocol: reconstitute with Sterile Water for Injection or 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection → further dilute to the appropriate infusion concentration in 0.9% NaCl, 5% Dextrose in Water (D5W), or Lactated Ringer’s solution → administer by slow IV infusion over a minimum of 1–2 hours (confirm reconstitution volume and infusion rate with veterinarian); avoid rapid IV bolus administration — Doxycycline administered as a rapid IV bolus causes transient cardiovascular toxicity (hypotension, bradycardia, and cardiac arrhythmias) due to direct myocardial depression and vasodilation at high peak plasma concentrations
Mechanism of Action
-
30S ribosomal subunit inhibitor — bacteriostatic tetracycline: Doxycycline reversibly inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit at the 16S rRNA h34 helix (A-site), blocking aminoacyl-tRNA accommodation and preventing peptide chain elongation; the IV route bypasses oral bioavailability constraints, delivering 100% bioavailability and immediate therapeutic serum concentrations; high tissue and intracellular penetration follows rapid IV distribution — critical for eliminating Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and Rickettsia residing within intracellular morulae/inclusions inside macrophages and neutrophils, compartments inaccessible to many other antibiotic classes; complete mechanism detail available in the Alembic Docmycin Tablets listing
Indications for IV Formulation
- Severe or systemic tick-borne infections (Ehrlichia canis — tick fever/CME, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp.) where the patient is hospitalised, vomiting, or unable to tolerate oral medication
- Severe leptospirosis (Leptospira interrogans) — IV Doxycycline for the leptospiraemic/bacteraemic phase or as adjunct to IV Penicillin G/Ampicillin in hospitalised patients
- Serious bacterial infections (respiratory, urinary, skin and soft tissue) in hospitalised dogs requiring parenteral antibiotic therapy
- Post-operative infection prophylaxis and treatment in hospitalised surgical patients
- Transition from IV to oral therapy: once the patient can tolerate oral medication, transition to oral Doxycycline (Alembic Docmycin Tablets) at the same dose to complete the treatment course
Reconstitution & Administration Protocol
- Reconstitute lyophilized powder with the specified volume of Sterile Water for Injection or 0.9% NaCl as per veterinarian’s protocol
- Further dilute reconstituted solution to appropriate concentration in compatible IV fluid (0.9% NaCl, D5W, or Lactated Ringer’s)
- Administer by slow IV infusion over minimum 1–2 hours — never by rapid IV bolus or direct IV push
- Use aseptic technique throughout preparation and administration; prepare immediately before use; discard any unused reconstituted solution
- Monitor patient during infusion for adverse reactions (phlebitis at infusion site, cardiovascular signs)
Contraindications & Safety
- Do not administer by rapid IV bolus or IM injection — IV infusion only
- Do not use in puppies under 6 months or pregnant/lactating females — Doxycycline incorporates into developing bone and dental matrix causing permanent discolouration and enamel hypoplasia
- Compatibility: do not mix Doxycycline IV solution with calcium-containing IV fluids (Ringer’s Lactate acceptable at low concentration; confirm compatibility before mixing) — calcium chelation precipitates Doxycycline from solution
- Monitor for IV site phlebitis (Doxycycline is irritant to venous endothelium at high concentrations); ensure adequate dilution
- Use with caution in dogs with hepatic impairment — biliary/faecal excretion pathway may be impaired
- Store below 25°C; protect from light; keep in original packaging; do not use beyond expiry date on vial
