Vivaldis SUBAvet IT 50 | Itraconazole 50mg Antifungal Tablets for Dogs & Cats

Vivaldis SUBAvet IT 50 is a veterinary prescription antifungal tablet containing Itraconazole 50mg — a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent active against a wide range of pathogenic fungi and yeasts. Itraconazole is the first-line veterinary antifungal for dermatophytosis (ringworm), Malassezia (yeast) dermatitis, and systemic mycoses (Aspergillosis, Cryptococcosis, Histoplasmosis, Blastomycosis, Candidiasis, Sporotrichosis) in dogs and cats. Each pack contains 10 tablets of Itraconazole 50mg, suitable for dose titration across a range of body weights as directed by a veterinarian.

Composition

  • Itraconazole: 50mg per tablet
  • Excipients: as per label

Drug Class

  • Veterinary antifungal — Triazole (azole) class — Itraconazole 50mg — broad-spectrum fungistatic/fungicidal — dogs and cats

Mechanism of Action

  • Ergosterol biosynthesis inhibition (CYP51/14α-demethylase): Itraconazole is a synthetic triazole antifungal that inhibits fungal cytochrome P450 enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51A1/Erg11); CYP51 catalyses the 14α-demethylation of lanosterol to 4,4’-dimethylcholesta-8,14,24-trienol, an essential step in the fungal ergosterol biosynthesis pathway; Itraconazole’s triazole nitrogen (N4 of the triazole ring) coordinates to the haem iron of CYP51, blocking oxygen and substrate access to the active site and inhibiting the enzyme; this leads to: (1) depletion of ergosterol — the primary sterol of the fungal plasma membrane, essential for membrane fluidity, permeability, and function of membrane-embedded proteins (ion transporters, efflux pumps); (2) accumulation of toxic 14α-methylated sterol intermediates (lanosterol, eburicol, obtusifoliol) that disrupt membrane integrity; (3) resulting membrane disruption impairs nutrient uptake, ion homeostasis, and cell wall synthesis — leading to fungistasis or fungicidal activity depending on fungal species and itraconazole concentration; Itraconazole has high selectivity for fungal CYP51 over mammalian CYP51 (cholesterol biosynthesis), but also inhibits mammalian CYP3A4 (hepatic drug metabolism) — relevant for drug interactions
  • Spectrum of activity: Dermatophytes (Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton verrucosum — causes of ringworm/dermatophytosis); Malassezia pachydermatis and Malassezia furfur (yeast dermatitis, otitis externa); Aspergillus fumigatus and other Aspergillus spp. (Aspergillosis); Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii (Cryptococcosis); Histoplasma capsulatum (Histoplasmosis); Blastomyces dermatitidis (Blastomycosis); Sporothrix schenckii (Sporotrichosis); Candida spp. (Candidiasis — variable sensitivity); Pythium insidiosum (variable — reduced sensitivity; alternative agents preferred)
  • Pharmacokinetics in dogs and cats: Itraconazole is highly lipophilic with extensive tissue distribution; plasma protein binding >99%; distributes into skin, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and nail/claw with concentrations exceeding plasma by 2–10× (pharmacokinetic basis for efficacy in dermatophytosis and onychomycosis); hepatic metabolism via CYP3A4 to hydroxy-itraconazole (active metabolite with comparable antifungal activity); terminal half-life ≈20–30 hours in dogs; pulse dosing or once-daily continuous dosing regimens are used depending on indication; oral absorption is enhanced by administration with food (especially high-fat meal) in dogs — administer with food

Indications

  • Dermatophytosis (ringworm) caused by Microsporum canis, Trichophyton spp. in dogs and cats
  • Malassezia dermatitis and Malassezia otitis externa in dogs
  • Systemic Aspergillosis in dogs (nasal, disseminated)
  • Cryptococcosis in dogs and cats (often combined with fluconazole)
  • Histoplasmosis and Blastomycosis in dogs
  • Sporotrichosis in cats (under specialist veterinary guidance)
  • Candidiasis in dogs and cats (mucocutaneous, systemic)
  • Onychomycosis (nail/claw fungal infection) in dogs

Dosage & Administration

  • Typical dose: 5–10mg/kg body weight orally once daily; dose and duration vary significantly by indication and species — always follow veterinary prescription
  • Administer with food to maximise oral absorption
  • Pack of 10 tablets (50mg per tablet); suitable for dose adjustment across weight ranges
  • Prescription required — administer strictly as directed by a veterinarian

Contraindications & Safety

  • Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to itraconazole or other azole antifungals
  • Use with caution in animals with hepatic disease — monitor liver enzymes (ALT, ALP) during extended therapy; itraconazole is hepatotoxic at high doses or with prolonged use
  • Significant drug interactions: itraconazole inhibits CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein — increases plasma levels of ciclosporin, prednisolone, digoxin, ivermectin, midazolam, vincristine, and other CYP3A4-metabolised drugs; inform veterinarian of all concurrent medications
  • Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals (teratogenic in rodents at high doses)
  • Cats: monitor for signs of hepatotoxicity (anorexia, vomiting, jaundice, lethargy) — cats may be more susceptible to itraconazole-associated hepatopathy than dogs
  • Store in a cool, dry place; keep out of reach of children
