Virbac Canitone is a palatable hepatoprotective nutraceutical tablet for dogs and cats, formulated to support normal liver function and the body's natural detoxification pathways. Each tablet combines Silybin bound to phosphatidylcholine (Silybin-PC) with zinc and vitamin E, a combination commonly used in veterinary practice to support hepatocyte health in pets under metabolic stress, on long-term medication, or recovering under veterinary supervision.

• Zinc: 3.3 mg
• Vitamin E: 150 IU

Active ingredients and mechanisms of action

Silybin-PC: Silybin is the principal active flavonolignan of milk thistle (Silybum marianum). Bound to phosphatidylcholine, its oral bioavailability is substantially improved compared with plain silymarin. Silybin acts as a free-radical scavenger, supports intracellular glutathione status, and is reported to stabilise hepatocyte membranes, limiting the entry of hepatotoxins into liver cells. It also has an anti-fibrotic, stellate-cell modulating effect described in the hepatology literature.

Zinc: An essential cofactor for numerous hepatic enzymes and for urea-cycle function. Zinc supports antioxidant defence through metallothionein induction and is used in chronic hepatopathies to help limit copper accumulation and oxidative damage.

Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol): A lipid-soluble antioxidant that protects hepatocyte and mitochondrial membranes from lipid peroxidation, a central mechanism of injury in cholestatic and oxidative liver disease.

Indications

• Nutritional support of normal liver function in dogs and cats.
• Adjunct support for pets on prolonged medication such as anticonvulsants, corticosteroids or long-course antimicrobials, as advised by a veterinarian.
• Support for pets with a history of raised liver enzymes, hepatic stress or toxin exposure.
• Antioxidant support in geriatric pets and during convalescence.

Directions for use

Administer orally as directed by your veterinarian. Tablets are palatable and may be given directly or with food. Dosing is typically based on body weight and the underlying condition, so follow the prescribing veterinarian's schedule and complete the advised course. Fresh drinking water should be available at all times.
