Vetrina Hemeliv Hematinic & Liver Tonic Syrup for Dogs & Cats (200ml)

Vetrina Hemeliv Syrup is a multi-active hematinic and hepatoprotective liver tonic formulated for dogs and cats, combining highly bioavailable iron (Ferrous Ascorbate 75mg/10ml), erythropoiesis co-factors (Folic Acid 1.1mg, Vitamin B12 75mcg, Cobalt 1.25mg), B-complex vitamins (Thiamine 11.25mg, Pyridoxine 11.25mg, Niacinamide 3mg), hepatoprotective Silymarin (20mg), and hepatotrophic Choline Bitartrate (1.8mg) per 10ml. Hemeliv addresses iron deficiency anaemia, nutritional anaemia, B-complex deficiencies, and hepatic stress in dogs and cats — supporting haemoglobin synthesis, red blood cell production, liver detoxification, and recovery from illness, surgery, and chronic debilitation.

Composition (per 10ml)

  • Ferrous Ascorbate — 75mg: Highly bioavailable iron-ascorbate complex — iron (Fe²⁺) chelated with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C); the ascorbate component maintains iron in the reduced ferrous (Fe²⁺) state, which is the absorbable form via duodenal DMT-1 (divalent metal transporter 1); ascorbate additionally enhances intestinal iron absorption by reducing dietary ferric (Fe³⁺) iron to the absorbable ferrous form; iron is the essential component of haemoglobin (in the haem ring of haemoglobin, iron reversibly binds O₂ for oxygen transport), myoglobin (oxygen storage in muscle), and cytochrome c (mitochondrial electron transport chain); iron deficiency impairs haem synthesis via the rate-limiting enzyme ALA-synthase (delta-aminolaevulinic acid synthase), resulting in microcytic hypochromic anaemia; Ferrous Ascorbate has superior GI tolerability compared to Ferrous Sulphate due to reduced free radical generation and GI mucosal irritation from unchelated iron
  • Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) — 1.1mg: Water-soluble; essential for one-carbon (methyl) transfer via tetrahydrofolate (THF) coenzyme system; required for dTMP (thymidylate) synthesis from dUMP by thymidylate synthase — and therefore for DNA replication in all rapidly dividing cells; in erythropoiesis, Folic Acid is essential for erythroblast proliferation and maturation in bone marrow; Folic Acid deficiency causes megaloblastic anaemia (large, immature, nucleated red blood cells with defective DNA synthesis) and hypersegmented neutrophils; works synergistically with Vitamin B12 in the methionine synthase/homocysteine remethylation cycle
  • Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin) — 75mcg: Water-soluble; essential for two enzymatic reactions: (1) methionine synthase — remethylation of homocysteine to methionine using 5-methyl-THF as methyl donor; B12 deficiency traps folate as 5-methyl-THF (‘methylfolate trap’), functionally depleting the THF pool for DNA synthesis and causing megaloblastic anaemia identical to Folic Acid deficiency; (2) methylmalonyl-CoA mutase — conversion of methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA, required for odd-chain fatty acid and branched-chain amino acid catabolism and myelin synthesis; B12 deficiency causes both megaloblastic anaemia and subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord (neural demyelination); intestinal B12 absorption requires intrinsic factor (IF) secreted by gastric parietal cells; dogs and cats with GI disease, atrophic gastritis, or intestinal malabsorption may have impaired B12 absorption
  • Cobalt — 1.25mg: Essential trace mineral; the central metal atom of the corrin ring of Vitamin B12 (cobalamin); cobalt is required for endogenous synthesis of Vitamin B12 by intestinal microbiota; in ruminants, cobalt deficiency causes Vitamin B12 deficiency and subsequent anaemia; in dogs and cats, supplemental cobalt supports intestinal microbial cobalamin synthesis and erythropoiesis; cobalt has also been shown to stimulate erythropoietin (EPO) secretion from renal peritubular cells by inhibiting prolyl hydroxylase domain (PHD) enzymes, stabilising HIF-1α (hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha) and activating EPO gene transcription — the same pathway activated by tissue hypoxia in anaemia
  • Thiamine (Vitamin B1) — 11.25mg: Water-soluble; coenzyme thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP); essential cofactor for pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH — entry of glycolytic pyruvate into the TCA cycle as acetyl-CoA), alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (TCA cycle step 4), and transketolase (pentose phosphate pathway, required for NADPH and ribose-5-phosphate synthesis); Thiamine deficiency impairs cellular energy metabolism, particularly in neural tissue; supports energy metabolism in recovering and debilitated dogs and cats
  • Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) — 11.25mg: Water-soluble; coenzyme pyridoxal phosphate (PLP); essential for amino acid transamination (all amino acid interconversion and gluconeogenesis from amino acids), ALA synthase (the first and rate-limiting step in haem biosynthesis — condensation of glycine and succinyl-CoA to form delta-aminolaevulinic acid); Pyridoxine deficiency directly impairs haem synthesis and causes sideroblastic anaemia (iron accumulates in mitochondria of erythroblasts as haem synthesis is blocked); also required for neurotransmitter synthesis (serotonin, dopamine, GABA) and glycogen phosphorylase (glycogenolysis)
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — 3mg: Water-soluble; precursor to NAD⁺ and NADP⁺ — essential redox coenzymes for oxidative phosphorylation (Complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain accepts electrons from NADH), TCA cycle (multiple NAD⁺-dependent dehydrogenases), glycolysis (G3P dehydrogenase), and anabolic reductive biosynthesis (NADPH-dependent reactions including fatty acid synthesis and glutathione reduction); Niacinamide additionally has anti-inflammatory properties via PARP-1 inhibition; supports energy metabolism and tissue repair in recovering animals
  • Silymarin — 20mg: Standardised flavonolignan complex extracted from milk thistle (Silybum marianum); primary active components are silybin (silibinin), silydianin, and silychristin; multi-mechanism hepatoprotective agent: (1) antioxidant — scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation radicals in hepatocyte membranes, protecting against oxidative hepatocyte injury from hepatotoxins, drugs, and metabolic stress; (2) membrane stabilisation — inhibits toxin uptake into hepatocytes by competing for hepatocyte membrane transporters (OATP1B1/1B3), reducing entry of hepatotoxic compounds; (3) stimulates hepatocyte protein synthesis — activates RNA polymerase I, enhancing ribosomal RNA synthesis and hepatocyte regenerative protein synthesis; (4) enhances hepatic glutathione (GSH) synthesis — increases hepatic GSH concentration by up to 35%, enhancing Phase II detoxification capacity; (5) anti-fibrotic — inhibits hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and TGF-β1 signalling, reducing collagen synthesis and hepatic fibrosis progression; indicated in hepatic lipidosis, drug-induced hepatotoxicity, chronic hepatitis, copper storage disease (Bedlington Terriers, Labrador Retrievers), and hepatic oxidative stress
  • Choline Bitartrate — 1.8mg: Choline is an essential nutrient; precursor to phosphatidylcholine (lecithin — the primary structural phospholipid of hepatocyte cell membranes and VLDL lipoprotein particles); hepatic VLDL synthesis and secretion requires phosphatidylcholine — choline deficiency causes hepatic lipid accumulation (hepatic lipidosis/fatty liver) due to impaired VLDL export of hepatic triglycerides; also a precursor to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine; hepatotrophic — supports hepatocyte membrane integrity and regeneration; particularly relevant in cats (which are highly susceptible to hepatic lipidosis) and in dogs with hepatic steatosis
