Orijen Puppy Dry Food (All Breeds)
  • Meat-heavy / High protein
Orijen Puppy is composed largely of whole animal ingredients: free-run chicken & turkey, wild-caught fish, cage-free eggs. A large portion of the meat content is “fresh or raw.”
  • WholePrey philosophy
It aims to include not only muscle meat but also organs, cartilage, bones, etc., mimicking a more natural diet.
  • Low carbohydrate / Grain-free
The formula reduces grains and focuses on legumes, vegetables, fruits. This helps in slower sugar release and keeps carbohydrates relatively low.
  • High fat content
Puppies need more fat for growth, energy, brain development. Orijen Puppy has a higher fat percentage compared to many standard puppy foods.
  • Rich in micronutrients + DHA / EPA
Omega-3s and Omega-6s, essential fatty acids, plus calcium, phosphorus etc., are present to support bone, brain, skin, coat development.
  • Life-stage / All Breed
Designed for puppies of all breeds. However, for very large breeds, especially in early weeks, some caveats (“growth of Great Dane puppies prior to 14 weeks” exception in some guidelines) are mentioned.

⚠️ Potential Drawbacks / Things to Note
  • Richness can upset some puppies
Because of the high protein & fat, some puppies might have digestive upsets when starting. Transitioning gradually is important.
  • Cost
This is a premium brand. The cost per kg is significantly higher than average puppy foods.
  • Grain-free concerns
Some concerns have been raised in veterinary literature and communities about grain-free diets (especially heavy on legumes) and their possible associations with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs, though cause/effect is not fully settled. If your puppy is predisposed (breed, health history), discussing with a vet is wise.
  • Size of kibble
All-breed means kibble size might be larger than what tiny toy-breed puppies can manage easily. So, for very small puppies, you may need to soften or use smaller breed puppy food.
  • Overfeeding risk
Because it’s very nutrient-dense, feeding too much can lead to too rapid growth in large breeds, which can stress joints. Monitoring growth, body condition is important.
