A cat straining in the litter tray and passing little or no urine is a life-threatening emergency, especially a male cat: a blocked urethra can be fatal within a day or two. Go to a veterinarian immediately, do not wait to see if a food helps. This diet works by altering urine composition, so it is not a general cat food and is not suitable for kittens or for pregnant or lactating cats. It is formulated for struvite, and the wrong stone type matters: an acidifying diet can encourage calcium oxalate stones, so your cat's stone or crystal type must be confirmed before feeding. Dissolution feeding is a defined course, not a forever food, and your veterinarian will tell you when to move to a maintenance urinary diet. Do not give urinary acidifiers or other supplements alongside it without veterinary advice, and do not feed other foods, treats, or table scraps during the course, as they undo the urine chemistry the diet depends on. Water intake is critical — provide several fresh water sources and consider a fountain. Introduce gradually over five to seven days. Return to your veterinarian if signs recur or your cat stops eating. Store sealed in a cool dry place.
