For oral use in dogs and cats — give as directed by a licensed veterinarian. Calcium is one supplement where more is genuinely not better. Do not over-supplement large and giant breed puppies: excess calcium during growth interferes with normal skeletal development and is linked to serious joint and bone disease, so these puppies should only be supplemented on veterinary advice. Do not give calcium to a pregnant bitch or queen in the run-up to whelping unless your veterinarian directs it, because supplementing before birth suppresses the body's own calcium-regulating hormones and can make milk fever (eclampsia) more likely afterwards, the opposite of what you want. Vitamin D3 is fat-soluble and accumulates in the body, so never exceed the recommended dose. Milk fever is an emergency: a nursing mother that becomes restless, pants, trembles, stiffens, or collapses needs immediate veterinary treatment, not an oral supplement. Use with caution in pets with kidney disease. Shake well before each use. Keep out of reach of children. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Drools Canine Cal is a calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D3 syrup for dogs and cats, formulated to support bone development and skeletal health. The three work as a unit rather than individually: calcium and phosphorus are the raw minerals that make up bone, and vitamin D3 is what allows the gut to absorb them in the first place, which is why calcium alone often disappoints. The ratio between calcium and phosphorus matters as much as the amounts, since the body needs them in balance to mineralise bone properly. Particularly useful in growing puppies with deficiencies, as an adjuvant in rickets therapy, during fracture healing, and for nursing mothers whose skeletons are being drained by milk production. Supplied in a 200ml bottle.

What the Nutrients Do

• Calcium — the principal mineral of bone and teeth, and also essential for muscle contraction, nerve signalling, and blood clotting. The skeleton acts as the body's calcium reserve, which is why heavy demand such as lactation draws minerals straight out of the bones
• Phosphorus — partners calcium as calcium phosphate, the mineral crystal that gives bone its hardness and strength. Supplied here in balance with calcium, as an incorrect ratio impairs mineralisation
• Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) — drives active absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the intestine and regulates their deposition into bone. Without adequate D3, dietary calcium is largely wasted, which is the underlying problem in rickets
• Vitamin B12 — supports red blood cell formation, appetite, and energy metabolism during growth and recovery
