Acana Puppy Small Breed Dry Dog Food, Grain Free Dry Dog Food for Puppies
Product details
Acana Puppy Small Breed
ACANA Puppy Small Breed is a biologically-appropriate, high-meat dry food formulated for puppies of small breeds (those that will weigh up to about 9 kg as adults).
Some key features:
Meat content: ~70% animal ingredients (fresh, raw, or dehydrated), from sources like free-run chicken, wild-caught flounder, cage-free eggs, plus organs, cartilage etc. Grain-free: It doesn’t include grains like wheat, rice etc. Instead, it uses legumes, peas, lentils, etc.
Nutritional analysis (approximate): • Protein ~33 % minimum • Fat ~20 % min • Fibre ~5 % max; ash ~7 % max; moisture ~12 % max
Other nutrients: It includes DHA/EPA Omega-3s, glucosamine & chondroitin (which support joint health), vitamins, minerals.
Calorie density: Relatively high because of the meat and fat content, which is appropriate since small breed pups have higher metabolic rates.
Pros (What’s good about it)
Very meat-rich, which helps build muscle and supports growth.
Grain-free formulation may help pups with grain sensitivities or allergies.
Small kibble size (formulated for small breeds) so easier for small mouths to chew.
Includes natural whole ingredients & botanicals, offering micronutrients, fibre, antioxidants.
Good for skin & coat health (thanks to Omega-3 & 6 oils).
Made with relatively high quality standards (fresh / raw ingredients, “WholePrey” approach).
Potential Drawbacks / Things to Be Careful About
Because it's grain-free and uses legumes etc., some dogs may have digestive intolerance (e.g. gas, soft stools) when switching over. So transitions should be gradual.
Higher calorie density means risk of overfeeding, especially if a pup is less active. Need to monitor weight.
Grain-free diets have come under scrutiny in some studies for associations with certain heart conditions in dogs (DCM = dilated cardiomyopathy). While there's no direct proof that this product causes issues, it's something owners & vets often discuss. If your pup has a predisposition or family history, check with your vet.
Cost tends to be higher (premium brand / ingredients).
How to Use / Feeding Tips
Feed according to manufacturer’s guidelines as a starting point, then adjust based on activity level, growth, body condition.
Feed in 2 or more meals per day (small breeds typically do better with more frequent feeding rather than one large meal).
Always ensure clean water available.
When introducing, switch gradually over ~5-7 days (mix old and new food) to avoid digestive upsets.
Monitor body weight & condition — small breeds can gain fat quickly if overfed
